How I became interested in helping Cayo’s animals:

When I was 11 years old, my mom passed away. My dad was always working and my two smaller siblings and I were always alone at home. One day, while going to school, we saw two little puppies roaming the streets and searching for food in the garbage. We wanted to take them home but since we were going to school we decided to wait until the end of the day when we were returning home to take them with us.

When we were on our way home, we saw a little boy was playing with the puppies near a small house and we asked him if the puppies belonged to him. He said, “Yes” and if were interested in one, he would sell it to us.  He asked for $10 for one but my little sister only had $2.75 and my little brother $2.25. We told him we could only give him $5 and he hurriedly agreed.  We were so happy we managed to get our very first puppy to play with. We named him Pouie.

Pouie became our friend, our baby, our companion. He was so tinywith a big belly filled with worms and we thought he wouldn’t survive. He became sick and we really didn’t know how to take care of a puppy. Thankfully, we learned of a vet, who had a clinic by the school. We all gathered our school money to pay for the vet bill.  This Vet has been our friend ever since and gave us discounts and payment plans when we found it hard to pay for his medication.

This puppy changed our lives and we weren’t sad anymore.  We cared for him until July 20, 2018 when he crossed the Rainbow Bridge and because of that experience, in his name, I decided to help all the dogs roaming in the streets and fight for the rights of those mistreated by their owners. These dogs need people to speak for them since they cannot do so and it’s for this reason that I joined Cayo Animal Welfare Society and became a board member.Right now I have nine dogs and 2 cats, including two fosters, and I will not give up. I will fight for their rights until the end of my days because the love that they give to us is perfect and unconditional. They will never care if you are rich or poor, they will always love you more than they love themselves.
